Third detainee dies at Newark ICE facility; agency changed death reporting rules

Jan 27, 2025 · Newark, NJ, Haiti

A third detainee died at Delaney Hall ICE detention facility in late July after experiencing a seizure, but ICE did not publicly disclose the death because the agency changed its reporting methodology to exclude deaths within 30 days of release from custody. Rep. Rob Menendez (D-NJ) confirmed the death during an oversight visit Monday; the same day news broke about Edwin Cornejo Lopez's death over the weekend. Jean Wilson Brutus, a 41-year-old Haitian immigrant, also died at the facility in December. A detainee strike in May over conditions at Delaney Hall prompted protests outside the facility, where ICE agents used pepper spray and batons.
