John Phillips, a U.S. citizen, was handcuffed and detained by ICE agents at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport while attempting to board a Delta flight to Las Vegas on August 9, 2026. ICE agents mistook Phillips for a British national who shared the same name and birthdate. According to reports, Delta employees directed Phillips to board last citing technical issues, and ICE agents then stopped and pinned him against a jet bridge before handcuffing him. Agents held Phillips for approximately five minutes, using facial recognition to access his phone before confirming his identity and releasing him. Phillips was subsequently able to board his flight. Phillips is seeking clarification about Delta's role in the incident, including whether the airline cooperated with ICE and what information Delta may have provided. DHS acknowledged the case and stated the agency takes responsibility for protecting the public and conducting operations professionally and lawfully.
