A federal judge in California appointed two outside monitors to track how long the government detains immigrant children, citing reports that officials have been holding kids far beyond the 30-day limit set by the Flores settlement, sometimes nearly a year. Testimonies described inhumane conditions, inadequate medical care, and abuse by guards, including incidents of male guards entering areas where teenage girls were showering. The monitors will oversee CBP facilities in the Rio Grande Valley, El Paso, and San Diego sectors, as well as ICE's South Texas Family Residential Center in Dilley and various hotels used for detention.
