The State Department, coordinating with DHS, said the move targets people it alleges committed asylum fraud by entering as tourists or business visitors before seeking protection. Immigration attorneys called the action largely symbolic since visa overstays are already deportable offenses, and officials said revocation would not necessarily lead to immediate deportation. The State Department cited Colombian activist Beto Coral, who was deported in July after supporting a leftist presidential candidate opposed by Colombia's current president, as an example of alleged asylum fraud.
