ICE raids Memphis nightclub, detains over 100 patrons including children's parents

Federal agents with ICE, Homeland Security Investigations, and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation raided El Corralón, a Memphis nightclub, around 1 a.m. on Aug. 29 in an operation DHS called 'Operation Corral Light.' TBI said it was executing search warrants tied to an investigation into illegal gambling machines and drug activity, but witnesses and advocacy group Vecindarios901 said ICE detained an estimated 100 to 120 patrons and employees, zip-tying them and transporting some to Mason, Tennessee, and Louisiana. DHS reported 121 arrests, citing criminal histories including larceny, drug possession, domestic violence, DUI, assault, child endangerment, and prostitution among some detainees, while immigrant advocates said the operation ignored legal documents held by others. Witnesses described children left crying in the street for detained parents, and advocate Jose Salazar said officers drew guns and mocked people during the operation. Memphis Police said they only assisted with traffic and crowd control. State Rep. Gabby Salinas and immigration attorneys questioned whether the operation exceeded the scope of the warrant and violated due process, prompting a response from the mayor.
