Víctor Salgado Araujo, 44, was riding in a van with his brother Lorenzo Salgado Araujo on July 7 when an ICE agent fatally shot Lorenzo during an enforcement operation on Canal Street in Houston's Magnolia Park neighborhood. ICE said Lorenzo tried to flee and used the vehicle as a weapon, but family attorneys dispute that account and have called for release of video evidence. Víctor was handcuffed and detained at an ICE facility in Houston for more than 50 days, held as a material witness without learning the full extent of his brother's death until after his own arrest. His attorney, Ruby Powers, said he was 'relieved and grateful' upon release on August 30, finally able to begin grieving; his family said his first meal afterward was chilaquiles from his favorite restaurant. They thanked the Mexican Consulate of Houston and Powers Law Group for their support. Víctor is expected to testify before a grand jury investigating the shooting, is pursuing a U visa as a crime witness, and faces an ongoing deportation case, while an FBI investigation continues.
