El Salvador TPS holders face lapse as DHS misses required termination notice deadline

Sep 9, 2026·Location: Washington, DC

Country of origin: El Salvador

El Salvador's Temporary Protected Status is set to expire while DHS has not published the legally required Federal Register notice to officially terminate it. Federal law required Secretary Markwayne Mullin to announce a renew-or-end decision by July 11, 2026, and missing that deadline may trigger an automatic six-month extension. More than 170,000 Salvadorans could lose their ability to legally work in the U.S. as USCIS and E-Verify tell employers to treat September 9 as the cutoff despite no formal termination order existing.
