Luis Galeano, an exiled Nicaraguan journalist who directs the interview program Café con Voz, was detained by ICE agents on September 14, 2026 while driving for Uber in Orlando, Florida to supplement his journalism income. His wife, Deykel Santamaría, said she received only a brief 15-second call before his phone was taken, during which he asked her to contact a lawyer and journalists. Galeano fled Nicaragua in 2018 after an arrest warrant was issued against him for his reporting critical of Daniel Ortega's regime, and applied for asylum in the U.S. in June 2019, a case that remains pending and is supported by extensive documentation of the persecution he faced. In 2023, the Ortega-Murillo government stripped him and 93 other journalists, writers, and activists of their Nicaraguan citizenship. Members of the Nicaraguan opposition and journalism community, including Grupo Monteverde spokesperson Juan Sebastián Chamorro and Congresswoman María Elvira Salazar, expressed solidarity and said his life would be at extreme risk if he were deported.
