The DHS Office of Inspector General released a report finding that detainees at the now-closed Alligator Alcatraz facility in the Florida Everglades were held in cramped conditions, including small metal enclosures measuring 52 inches by 52 inches, for up to two hours at a time. The report found housing units provided detainees less than half the living space required under Florida state jail standards, and detainees received less recreation time and fewer shower opportunities than required by ICE and state standards. OIG described the metal enclosures as "highly unconventional" and said at least one detainee was placed in one for 26 minutes as an apparent disciplinary measure. DHS disputed the findings, stating that all detainee facilities are clean and that allegations of inhumane conditions are false.
