ICE conducted a five-day multi-agency operation called 'Operation Safe Community-Indiana' from August 30 to September 3, 2026, arresting more than 400 people (426 by one count) statewide, with most arrests concentrated in the Indianapolis metro area. ICE said those detained had criminal histories including sex crimes, assault, domestic violence, drug trafficking, weapons offenses, fraud, identity theft, and burglary, and cited some gang affiliations with MS-13, 18th Street, and Tren de Aragua. The Lawrence Police Department assisted ICE in detaining a person with felony warrants at a hair salon. An immigration attorney disputed ICE's characterization, saying many detained clients had no criminal record, and U.S. Rep. Andre Carson raised concerns about racial profiling, citing that 96% of ICE arrests in July did not involve prior criminal convictions. Businesses near a raid site in Lawrence, including a Haitian market and Honduran restaurant, reported steep sales declines, layoffs, and closures as residents avoided leaving their homes out of fear. Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett said the city received no advance notice of the operation.
