UN experts warn Trump's third-country deportations risk torture, death for migrants
Sep 28, 2026
UN human rights experts warned that the Trump administration's practice of deporting migrants to third countries with which they have no ties has caused a 'cascade of human rights violations,' including risks of torture, enforced disappearance, and death. Since 2025, the US has paid 35 countries to accept deportees, sending about 20,000 people to Mexico and over 5,000 by flight to Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, and central Asia. Investigations found cases including an Iranian woman who had protested her government and a gay man who fled persecution in Ghana. The experts called on the US to immediately halt the policy, saying it allows the government to skirt legal obligations against returning people to places where they face persecution.
