Class action filed over conditions at Miramar ICE field office in Florida
Oct 2, 2026·Location: Miramar, FL

The Southern Poverty Law Center and Americans for Immigrant Justice filed a federal class action lawsuit on behalf of people held at ICE's Miramar field office, alleging the site has become a de facto detention facility with unconstitutional conditions. Since October 2025, ICE has held people there for days at a time, far beyond the 12-hour limit set by its own policy, with detainees packed into cells, a garage, and offices without beds, forced to sleep on floors or office desks. The facility reportedly lacks functioning medical care despite daily medical emergencies, has toilets exposed to surveillance cameras and other detainees, and has cut detained people off from confidential communication with attorneys. The lawsuit follows reports of overcrowding up to 600% over capacity, clogged toilets overflowing with waste, and an oversight visit by Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz that found roughly 150 people packed into cells.
