At least 73 detained immigrants launched a mass hunger strike at the GEO Group-run Folkston D Ray James ICE processing center in Georgia to protest prolonged detention and facility conditions. Detainees, including asylum seekers from Russia, China, Sudan, Afghanistan, Nepal and Yemen, say they have been held from 16 months to nearly three years without being accused of a crime. One organizer, Russian asylum seeker Idris Makhmudov, was reportedly placed in solitary confinement, and detainees allege substandard medical care, moldy food, and due process violations.
