ICE arrests more than 70 people across Fresno-Madera area amid profiling reports
Oct 8, 2026·Location: Fresno, CA
Local officials and immigrant advocacy groups say ICE arrested more than 70 people across the Fresno and Madera County area over the course of a week, with agents conducting "roving patrols" near agricultural fields, gas stations, and construction sites frequented by Latino workers. Nora Zaragoza-Yáñez, program manager of the Valley Watch Network, said agents are "targeting any laborers" and "targeting transport vans" rather than making warranted arrests. The surge may be part of a reported ICE initiative called "Operation Safe California," which, according to unnamed sources cited by The Washington Examiner, is targeting undocumented immigrants including those with no criminal record over 45 days to boost arrest numbers. Fresno officials including Assemblymember Esmeralda Soria and City Councilmember Miguel Arias publicly denounced the tactics as racial profiling and warned it could suppress Latino voter turnout ahead of the midterm elections.
