Federal immigration agents detained people at a Wawa parking lot on Bridge Avenue in Red Bank during a series of raids across Monmouth County last weekend, including on Martin Luther King Day. Employees at the strip mall said agents scrutinized customers sitting in their cars, and at least one man was taken into custody while drinking coffee in his vehicle. Witnesses confirmed two customers were detained, though advocacy groups and officials said reports suggested more people may have been taken in Red Bank, Freehold and Long Branch. Local officials, including Red Bank's mayor and a councilwoman, said police were not notified of the ICE activity, and ICE's regional office did not respond to requests for information.
