Victor Manuel Montilla, a 44-year-old Venezuelan Lyft driver, was found not guilty by a jury on September 16, 2026, of second-degree kidnapping stemming from a February 7, 2026 incident in West Jordan, Utah, in which a 15-year-old passenger left his moving vehicle after reporting he had taken a wrong route. His family said the incident resulted from app connectivity failures and a language barrier, noting Montilla had only been driving for Lyft for six days at the time. A judge ordered his immediate release after nearly seven months in jail, but ICE took him into custody that same day, and he remains held at the Salt Lake County jail while pursuing an asylum claim.
