Luis (a pseudonym) worked construction in Raleigh, North Carolina, for three years. In June 2026 he was pulled over for driving without a license. His $2,800 bond was paid that night, but he was told there was an immigration hold, and ICE collected him at 4:30 the next morning. The bond was never returned, and he missed his July court date because he was in ICE custody. At an ICE office in North Carolina he met Prisciliano Trejo Ricano, 29, who had lived in Durham since he was 3, and they were transferred together to the Stewart Detention Center in Lumpkin, Georgia. "He looked very healthy when he came in. He was a very healthy young man," Luis said. Over two to three weeks he watched Prisciliano begin coughing, then cough blood, with nosebleeds and purple blotches on his skin, while staff gave him ibuprofen. "They said he looked fine, that he didn't need medical attention." "He told us he felt really bad, that he was losing his sight." The men in the unit banged on the walls and doors to get him help. "They punished all of us. They took our tablets, took our commissary, for asking for medical attention." Prisciliano was hospitalized in July and died of acute leukemia on July 24, 2026. "Everyone gets sick. You don't know if you'll get medical care or if they'll let you die," Luis said. After more than a month at Stewart and transfers through Texas and Louisiana, he was flown to Tapachula, Mexico, in August 2026. HUMSI interviewed him in Tapachula in September 2026.
