Lue Yang, a Hmong refugee, was arrested by ICE at his workplace in St. Johns, Michigan, on July 15, 2025, based on a 1997 attempted home invasion conviction that had led to a final removal order. He remained in ICE detention for more than five months while his family and community sought his release. Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer issued Yang a full and unconditional pardon in October, and he returned home to St. Johns on Dec. 3. A Clinton County judge ruled on March 13 that the pardon voided his 1997 conviction, removing one of the last obstacles to resolving his immigration status.
