Arturo Suárez Trejo, a 33-year-old Venezuelan musician known as SuarezVzla, was detained by immigration officials in February 2025 while filming a music video in Raleigh, North Carolina. He had fled Venezuela in 2016 amid political persecution, eventually settling in Chile before migrating to the US in 2024 to join his brother, crossing through the Darién Gap and entering at San Diego via a CBP One appointment. After detention in Atlanta and Texas, he was flown to El Salvador's Cecot prison in mid-March, despite being told he was being deported to Venezuela, and his wife recognized him in a government propaganda photo the next day. His wife, who lives in Santiago with their four-month-old daughter, said she has had no further contact with him and fears for his safety, while friends and family describe him as a kind, teetotal dreamer with no criminal history.
