Heidy Cifuentes, a Guatemalan mother of three U.S.-citizen children who has lived in the U.S. for 17 years, was detained by ICE agents in Kansas City on May 27, 2025, when she arrived for what she believed was a routine annual check-in appointment. Cifuentes, who worked cleaning machinery at a pork processing plant under legal work authorization and has no criminal record, is the primary caregiver for her 5-year-old daughter Yaretzi, who is largely non-verbal due to severe autism and relies on her mother to communicate and calm her. Her attorney filed an application for a stay of deportation on humanitarian grounds, but ICE denied it on June 2, 2025, stating there was no appeal. Cifuentes was being held in detention near Kansas City International Airport and was expected to be transferred to the Chase County Detention Center in Cottonwood Falls, Kansas, ahead of her removal.
