Allison Bustillo Chinchilla, 20, a nursing assistant graduate who had earned a $60,000 scholarship to Gardner-Webb University, was arrested on Feb. 20 at her Charlotte home while caring for her three younger siblings, including one with autism, while her mother was at work. ICE agents forcibly entered the apartment heavily armed while searching for someone else. She was held for six months at the Stewart Detention Center in Lumpkin, Georgia, where she faced health issues and unsanitary conditions, and her mother paid $3,500 for an attorney to file a habeas corpus petition shortly before her hearing. On Aug. 26, an immigration judge granted her voluntary departure, allowing her to leave for Honduras — a country she left at age 8 and where she will live with her grandparents — without facing a 10-year reentry ban.
