Heury Gomez, a 43-year-old Manhattan green card holder from the Dominican Republic, was detained by federal agents at Newark International Airport on Aug. 6 as he returned from a birthday trip to Mexico. Gomez is the sole caretaker of his 18-year-old son Noah, who is non-verbal, has epilepsy, depends on a tracheostomy tube, and has lived in a Westchester hospital for seven years. DHS cited a decade-old misdemeanor conviction for assault and petty larceny as the reason for his detention, and Gomez said conditions at the Michigan facility felt unsafe, with food shortages sparking detainee riots. On Nov. 12, an immigration judge granted Gomez cancellation of removal, citing the hardship his son would face, and Gomez was released from North Lake Correctional Facility on Nov. 22, reuniting with his son before Thanksgiving.
