Carlos (name changed), originally from Guatemala, and his wife Inés (name changed) have lived in the United States for decades. On September 5, 2025, around 7:30 a.m., two vehicles cut in front of them as they drove to work in Washington, D.C. Agents asked for identification and detained Carlos but not Inés; their son arrived as Carlos was handcuffed. He was taken to the ICE Washington Field Office in Chantilly, Virginia, where he says he was held for four days in a room posted with a maximum capacity of 30 that held close to 100 men. There were no showers, people slept pressed against each other, and the only food was frozen burritos. Agents repeatedly asked detainees to reconsider "voluntary" departure even after he said he wanted a lawyer. Carlos was released after about two months and remains in deportation proceedings. Inés says her youngest child was devastated, and she stopped going to appointments for her glaucoma because she no longer felt safe leaving home. Advocates reported up to 80 to 100 people at a time in Chantilly rooms meant for 12.
