Federal law enforcement arrested 11 of 28 lawful permanent residents living in California who were charged in criminal complaints with election-related crimes, including fraudulent voter registration and false statements on naturalization applications. All 28 are green card holders who are not U.S. citizens and therefore not permitted to vote in U.S. elections. The arrests are part of 'Operation Protect the Vote,' a coordinated effort by California's four U.S. Attorney's Offices, after California declined a federal request to set aside mail-in ballots from more than 20,000 individuals identified as likely noncitizen registrants, prompting a federal lawsuit against the state.
