Atilio Portillo, a U.S. citizen from El Salvador who has lived in Charlotte since 1988 and became a citizen in 2013, says ICE agents boxed in his pickup truck on Idlewild Road while he was driving to work with his brother and nephew. Agents pointed a gun at his face, demanded identification, and broke the truck's windows when he refused to open the door without seeing a warrant. Portillo and his nephew, also a U.S. citizen, were handcuffed for nearly 30 minutes while agents verified their citizenship before releasing them, while Portillo's undocumented brother was taken to the Stewart Detention Center in Georgia. ICE has not responded to a request for comment.
