64-year-old Rafael Vela detained by federal agents at Silver Lake home, family disputes residency status

Rafael Vela, a 64-year-old from El Salvador who had lived in the U.S. for over 40 years, was detained by federal agents outside his Silver Lake home on January 7, 2026. Video footage shows masked agents struggling to detain Vela as he reached his doorstep before removing him in an unmarked vehicle. Vela believed he had permanent resident status, but a letter later confirmed discrepancies regarding his actual residency status. Neighbors described him as a friendly community member and expressed concern about the force used during the detention. DHS confirmed the arrest as part of an immigration enforcement operation.
