Chicago immigration court loses half its judges under Trump

Mar 3, 2026 · Chicago, IL

Chicago's immigration court has lost nine of 21 judges through resignations, buyouts, and terminations since January 2025, leaving only 14 permanent and 2 temporary judges to handle record case backlogs. Former judges cited changing court procedures, pressure from the Trump administration, and concerns about fair application of immigration law as reasons for departure. The exodus mirrors a larger national trend of immigration judge departures during Trump's second term.
