ICE agents detain people across Coachella Valley in indiscriminate sweeps, lawmakers demand transparency
May 15, 2026 · Coachella Valley, CA
Between May 10-13, 2026, ICE and Border Patrol conducted at least 19 confirmed enforcement operations across the Coachella Valley, including in Coachella, Thermal, Desert Hot Springs, and Indio. One documented incident showed agents stopping a man in a van; he was bruised during the encounter but released after showing identification. The Inland Coalition for Immigrant Justice documented more than a dozen operations, finding that agents targeted individuals based on appearance and vehicle type regardless of documentation status. Congressman Raul Ruiz and local school district officials called for greater transparency, describing the operations as indiscriminate and citing impacts on students, families, and local businesses. Local organizations expressed concern about racial profiling in the enforcement actions.
