Between January and October 2025, approximately 2,800 individuals were held in ICE's Colorado hold rooms—small, bedless, unofficial detention centers in strip malls and office parks—in violation of ICE's own 72-hour detention limit. Detainees, including infants, elderly individuals, families with children, and people with medical needs, were held for weeks and months before being shuttled through chains of detention facilities across Arizona, Louisiana, Wyoming, Texas, and other states before deportation, release, or remaining in the system. A data mapping project documented individual journeys revealing patterns of ICE detention practices, cooperation with local law enforcement, medical neglect, and the role of private detention operators like the GEO Group.
