ICE arrests surge in Chicago, targeting Southwest Side neighborhoods with less publicized tactics

Federal immigration enforcement has intensified across Chicago in recent weeks with at least 20 people arrested by ICE last week and 17 more arrested in the first week of July, according to rapid response groups documenting the arrests. The Southwest Side neighborhoods of Back of the Yards, Brighton Park, and Gage Park have been targeted most heavily. Legal groups report that the vast majority of recent detainees have no criminal records, and many arrests have occurred in public spaces including courthouses, schools, and grocery stores. Immigration advocacy organizations report that requests for legal services have doubled or increased significantly as residents seek assistance navigating heightened enforcement activity.
