Jul 28, 2026 · Morganton, NC

Thirteen people were arrested by ICE agents at a checkpoint near Wilson Creek recreation area in Pisgah National Forest on July 26, 2026, during a multi-agency operation involving the U.S. Forest Service and Caldwell County Sheriff's Office. According to ICE, many of those arrested had criminal histories including DUI and illegal reentry charges. The operation occurred at a weekend destination used by Latino families from surrounding communities, with witnesses describing it as "terrifying." Sandra Salazar, co-founder of Hands of Hope y Adventurous Latinos, reported that the partner of her cousin was among those detained, and many families with pending asylum cases were caught in the enforcement action. Sheriff Kevin Bean denied reports that children were separated from families during the operation.
