Immigration arrests in the Chicago area have risen sharply since the end of Operation Midway Blitz in December, with legal advocates reporting 170 referrals for assistance in June, up from about 100 in May, and verified arrests nearly doubling between April and May, according to The Resurrection Project and Organized Communities Against Deportations. Enforcement has continued at courthouses, including during traffic and domestic violence proceedings, despite a state law and court order barring such arrests, and agents have been reported recently in Gage Park, Pilsen, Humboldt Park and Albany Park. Organizers say arrests now appear more targeted than during Midway Blitz, when street vendors, day laborers and landscaping workers made up many of the roughly 4,500 people detained, and note incidents including a high-speed car chase in Dunning and a crash involving a bystander's vehicle in Albany Park. Advocates maintain that many detained while attending hearings or check-ins have not been convicted of crimes or have pending, unresolved cases.
