Man injured in Northern California ICE shooting; family disputes gang allegations

July 29, 2026Patterson, CAEl Salvador

Carlos Ivan Mendoza Hernandez, a Salvadoran man and father of a 2-year-old daughter, was shot by ICE agents on Interstate 5 at Sperry Avenue in the Patterson area of Stanislaus County, California. ICE acting director Todd Lyons said Mendoza Hernandez was undocumented and an alleged gang member wanted for questioning in connection with a murder in El Salvador. His fiancée Cindy and attorney Patrick Kolasinski disputed the gang allegation, stating he had no criminal encounters since arriving in the U.S. around 2019 or 2020. Kolasinski said he received information from El Salvador that Mendoza Hernandez had been acquitted of the murder charge and there should be no active warrant. The family had not been given updates on his condition or told how many times he was shot. A Stanislaus County Sheriff's Office spokesperson said he was in critical condition. His fiancée believes a recent traffic stop for a cracked windshield may have led to him being targeted. Kolasinski criticized ICE's handling of the confrontation, saying proper protocol would have been a calm approach. The FBI is leading the investigation.

Advocacy group Escucha Mi Voz said he complied with all conditions of his parole, with member Rogelio Lagunas stating, "Luis did everything the government required of him." Man held under mandatory ICE detention wins release and bond hearing after habeas petition

Aug 18, 2026Central Falls, RI

Jesus Alberto Sarmiento Perdomo filed a habeas corpus petition under 28 U.S.C. § 2241 challenging his arrest and continued detention by ICE, arguing he should be released and given a bond hearing before an immigration judge under 8 U.S.C. § 1226(a). He was held at the Donald W. Wyatt Detention Facility. The Government conceded that Sarmiento Perdomo is a noncitizen unlawfully present in the United States who had been detained under § 1226(a), and agreed the court should order a bond hearing under recent First Circuit precedent. The Government's only opposition was that he had not exhausted administrative remedies by requesting bond directly from an immigration judge, an argument the court rejected as futile since the Board of Immigration Appeals has held that immigration judges lack authority to grant bond to noncitizens present without admission. The court granted the habeas petition, ordering the Government to release Sarmiento Perdomo immediately, though it may transfer him to ICE's Boston Field Office solely to process his release and return property. The court denied the Government's request to place him under monitoring equipment pending a bond hearing. The Government was ordered to provide Sarmiento Perdomo a bond hearing within ten days, at which the immigration judge must consider alternatives to detention before ruling on flight risk or dangerousness, and to file a status report on the outcome within five days of that hearing.

The court ordered Respondents to file a response within 7 days addressing the date Petitioner entered the United States, whether he was previously apprehended and released by immigration authorities, and the status of his immigration and/or removal proceedings. The court also permitted electronic notice of filing to constitute proper service on the government respondents. Petitioner was granted 7 days to file a reply after the response is filed.

The court ordered the respondents, including named official Miguel Vergara, to respond within 7 days, addressing the date Petitioner entered the United States, whether he was previously apprehended and released by immigration authorities, and the status of his immigration or removal proceedings. The document does not specify Petitioner's nationality, family ties, employment, or the circumstances of his apprehension. Aug 18, 2026McCook, NE

Honduran man detained since 2013 entry wins court-ordered bond hearing after habeas challenge

Aug 18, 2026Philadelphia, PAHonduras

Petitioner Brayan Josue Gutierrez Altamirano is a national and citizen of Honduras who entered the United States in approximately 2013. He is currently held in ICE custody and filed a petition for writ of habeas corpus arguing he is being detained under the discretionary provisions of 8 U.S.C. § 1226(a) rather than the mandatory detention provisions of 8 U.S.C. § 1225(b)(2). He sought either release or a bond hearing before an Immigration Judge. Respondents opposed, arguing Petitioner remains an 'applicant for admission' subject to mandatory detention under § 1225(b)(2) because he was never lawfully admitted. The court found that because Petitioner had already entered and been living in the country, his detention is governed by § 1226(a)'s discretionary framework, consistent with numerous other rulings in the district. The court further held his continued detention without a bond hearing violated his due process rights and granted the petition, ordering a bond hearing within seven days and enjoining Respondents from denying bond based on § 1225(b)(2) or rearresting him absent specified conditions.

He filed a petition for a writ of habeas corpus and an emergency motion for a temporary restraining order in federal court, both of which were denied; an amended habeas petition was also denied in June 2026, allowing his detention to continue while broader legal challenges proceed. Former Cuban judge detained by ICE outside Florida home, denies Communist Party ties

Aug 18, 2026Cooper City, FLCuba

Katrina Castro-Menéndez, 41, a former municipal judge from Matanzas, Cuba, was detained by ICE agents outside her home in Cooper City, Florida, after her husband left for work and while her 15-year-old daughter slept inside. She was taken to ICE offices in Miramar and then to the Broward Transition Center, where she remains held pending removal proceedings. The Department of Homeland Security alleges she committed immigration fraud by concealing Communist Party membership on her asylum and residency applications, reasoning that her past judicial role implies such affiliation, but Katrina says a lawyer who charged her $3,000 never properly interviewed her and that mandatory Cuban civic groups she belonged to are distinct from party membership. She appeared before an immigration judge in Miami on August 5 without legal representation and testified she had never joined the Communist Party. Her husband, Deyni Rojas González, whose humanitarian parole documentation has expired, cannot visit her in person or maintain video calls, and she says she has rehearsed how to tell her daughter they may be deported to Cuba.

She remains in Border Patrol custody in Tucson, and it is unclear whether she will be transferred to an ICE detention facility. Her husband, Mevin Josué Guerra, said the couple, parents of two children with a third on the way, entered the U.S. from Venezuela in 2019 and applied for asylum. Guerra is recovering from a June car accident that left him in a 10-day coma with a tracheotomy and brain injuries, and told N+ Univisión, "She is my lifeline. We have no other family here." An immigration lawyer said her pregnancy and her husband's medical condition could be considered as evidence in the case, though the decision rests with a judge.

DOJ moves to revive smuggling charges against wrongly deported Salvadoran man

Aug 18, 2026Sacramento, CAMexico

Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran national living in Maryland with his U.S. citizen family, was unlawfully deported to El Salvador's CECOT prison in March 2025 despite a 2019 court order protecting him from removal due to gang violence risks. The Supreme Court unanimously ordered his return, and he was brought back to the U.S. in June 2025, after which federal prosecutors indicted him on human smuggling charges in Tennessee. Costa Rica offered him refugee status in August 2025, but the administration instead pursued deporting him to African nations, including Liberia, which have resisted. A judge ordered his release from ICE custody in December 2025 after finding government lawyers misled the court, and later blocked his re-detention and deportation to Liberia. A federal judge dismissed the smuggling charges in May 2026 as vindictive retaliation for his legal challenge, but in August 2026 the Justice Department asked the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals to reinstate the charges, a move his attorneys are contesting.

US citizen van driver stopped, five Haitian passengers detained by ICE in Springfield

Aug 17, 2026Springfield, OHHaiti

Beaubrun Charles Ardouin, a naturalized U.S. citizen who drives for a transportation company shuttling workers, was pulled over near Topre America in Springfield, Ohio, in what DHS called a 'targeted enforcement' stop. Ardouin said he showed officers his ID and told them he was a citizen, but they demanded identification from his five Haitian passengers and threatened to break his van's windows if he didn't unlock them. All five men, who said they had pending asylum applications, were detained and booked into Butler County Jail under ICE holds; jail records identified them as Canot Monnimat, Albert Francois, Nero Adrien Toussaint, Cadet Vixama and Wislain Fenelon. The stop occurred amid broader ICE activity across Springfield, including arrests near a car wash in an area with several Haitian-owned businesses, with some detainees' mugshots showing them still in work uniforms. Butler County Jail held 17 people listing Haiti as their birth country under ICE detention as of one recent Monday, as many of Springfield's estimated 10,000 to 15,000 Haitian residents became vulnerable to detention after a federal judge lifted a stay on the revocation of Temporary Protected Status for Haiti. Legal experts questioned whether officers had reasonable suspicion for the traffic stop, and DHS said several of the detained men have since been released or transferred.

Aug 17, 2026El Paso, TXVenezuela

Oswaldo José Pirela, a 34-year-old Venezuelan-born catching coordinator for the San Diego Padres' minor-league system, was detained by immigration authorities at El Paso International Airport while traveling for work. Pirela lives near Phoenix, Arizona, with his wife and two U.S.-born daughters, and previously played in the Texas Rangers' minor-league system after signing in 2009 before coaching for the Padres since 2024. He entered the U.S. in 2014, applied for asylum in 2015 citing fears of persecution over criticism of the Venezuelan government, and has a pending green card application along with a work permit his family says is valid until 2029. DHS stated his authorized stay expired in February 2018 and that pending applications or work permits do not confer legal status; he remains in custody pending removal proceedings. Relatives describe him as a devoted father, dedicated coach, and man of faith respected by coworkers and players, and they are seeking legal assistance and asking Rep. Abraham Hamadeh to intervene. His detention followed a broader ICE practice, begun in July, of using TSA flight lists to identify and detain travelers at airports.

L.A. family of green card holders detained for months over relative's 1979 role

Aug 17, 2026Los Angeles, CA

Maryam Tahmasebi, a professor at Los Angeles Pierce College; her husband Eissa Seyed Hashemi, an educator; and their 16-year-old son were detained by ICE in Los Angeles in April, and their green cards were revoked. Lawyers say the family was targeted because Eissa's mother, Masoumeh Ebtekar, was a spokesperson for the group that took Americans hostage during the 1979 Iran hostage crisis, decades before Eissa or his son were born. Maryam and her son have been held at the Dilley detention center in Texas while Eissa is held at a nearby facility, with the family limited to a 10-minute phone call every two weeks; colleagues describe Maryam as dedicated to her students and community. After more than 120 days in detention, the family offered to voluntarily depart the country but was denied, and their lawyers say the teenage son has been detained far longer than facilities are meant to hold children, describing conditions including black mold and non-potable water at the facility.

A federal court denied his attorneys' amended petition for writ of habeas corpus seeking his release. His family fears that without proper medical care or release, he will not survive in custody.

Man deported to El Salvador after months in Virginia jail; data shows hundreds more

Aug 16, 2026Stafford, VAEl Salvador

Oscar, a mechanic from the Fredericksburg area, was held under ICE custody at the Rappahannock Regional Jail before being moved through a chain of detention facilities in Virginia, Texas, and Louisiana and deported to El Salvador in 2024, despite having no felony record. He described poor conditions at the jail, being shackled throughout his deportation flight, and being accused of gang membership in El Salvador due to a paperwork error. Deportation Data Project records show 356 people were held under ICE custody at the jail and removed from the country between January 2025 and March 2026, with 67% having no criminal record beyond their immigration status. The jail's policy of querying ICE about foreign-born detainees exceeds what Virginia law requires, and a new state law, the Community Safety and Trust Act, may prohibit such cooperation without a judicial warrant.

Aug 14, 2026La Puente, CA

Witnesses and vendors, including David González and Gabriela Hoyos, said a fellow vendor selling chicharrones spotted the agents and alerted others, allowing workers to flee to their vehicles before any arrests. Two Don Chilaquiles employees told reporters that no one was detained this time because workers received the warning in time. The same location saw Border Patrol agents detain three workers in December 2025, and vendors say fear of enforcement persists even as they continue working to support their families.

She spent more than a month in federal immigration detention before being placed on a deportation flight to Brazil on August 14. Mid-flight, ICE officers received a phone call and offered Eliaser the choice to return to the U.S. or continue to Brazil; she chose to return and was released from custody. Eliaser is married to Army Staff Sgt. Alexis Jaramillo, a 43-year-old aviation operations specialist who has served in the Army for over a decade, and they have a 5-year-old son together. Following the incident and subsequent media reporting and Congressional investigation into deportations of military family members, Eliaser has another immigration appointment scheduled to reopen her case and advance her green card application. She reported struggling with trauma from her detention experience.
