Emmanuel Rodriguez, a father of three who immigrated 21 years ago seeking safety, was detained by State Highway Patrol on July 18, 2026, during a family beach vacation in Myrtle Beach after being pulled over for a broken headlight. Despite being eligible for a $232 PR bond that would have allowed immediate release, he was placed on a 48-hour ICE hold due to his immigration status and Horry County's close cooperation with ICE. Rodriguez has no history of violent crimes and has spent his life providing for his family and helping those in need. His daughter, a 20-year-old biology student at UNC Greensboro, describes him as the backbone of the family—both financially and emotionally—and notes he is being deported to a country he has not visited in over 24 years, leaving his wife to care alone for their two other children, including an 18-year-old son with severe autism.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement partnered with South Carolina law enforcement agencies, including the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, State Transit Police, and Duncan Police Department, to conduct two coordinated highway enforcement operations named Operation Safe Drive and Operation Rubber Duck. The operations took place along Interstate 26 and Interstate 85 from May 12 to May 14, 2026, targeting commercial vehicles, fraudulent truck drivers, invalid operator licenses, and immigration violations. The operations resulted in 114 arrests for immigration and criminal violations. Authorities conducted 145 vehicle stops, performed 77 vehicle inspections, issued 89 traffic citations, and removed 22 drivers and vehicles from service. Seizures included approximately 10 kilograms of cocaine valued at $200,000 and cash. According to advocacy groups and the ACLU, undocumented immigrants traveling in work trucks and vans, including construction and landscaping workers, were disproportionately affected by the stops and arrests. The operations are part of expanded immigration enforcement cooperation in South Carolina under a 287(g) agreement between state and local law enforcement and ICE.

On June 3, 2026, ICE detained 48 workers during a raid on Burnstein Von Seelen Precision Casting in Abbeville County, South Carolina, in an operation called Operation Ghost Story. Two company managers, Christopher Douglas Ramey and Sandy Lynn Willis, were arrested and indicted for failing to verify employee identities and facilitating the use of forged identity documents. Four additional defendants, including Xavier Martinez Adorno of Horry County, were indicted for providing and selling fraudulent identification documents including forged driver's licenses, Social Security cards, and counterfeit green cards—some using the identities of real U.S. citizens. The investigation involved local, state, and federal agencies including SLED, Homeland Security Investigations, and ICE.

On June 3-4, 2026, ICE and state law enforcement conducted a coordinated raid at Burnstein Von Seelen Precision Casting in Abbeville County, South Carolina, as part of Operation Ghost Story, a two-year investigation that began in October 2024. The operation detained 48 workers, primarily from Mexico and Guatemala, on immigration violations. None of the 48 detained workers were criminally charged. At least one detainee who was eight months pregnant was released but faces deportation proceedings and must wear an ankle monitor, while others remained in custody.

Alisson is currently in ICE custody and facing deportation. She arrived in the United States at age 9 and has built a life here. Her family is fundraising for legal fees and travel costs to support her case and maintain family connections.

ICE conducted operations in Bluffton, South Carolina that resulted in the detention of over a dozen individuals. Witness footage showed nearly 20 men being escorted into a detention van. According to immigration attorney Amy Deverard, those arrested were not criminals but were detained on administrative warrants, with many caught as collateral while authorities pursued others. Families report uncertainty about their detained relatives' locations and immigration proceedings.

Jairo Rossel Mejia-Mencia, a Honduran national, was arrested on May 29, 2026 in Beaufort County as part of a coordinated operation involving ICE, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, and the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office. He had entered the United States unlawfully, was previously removed, and re-entered the country. He has a pending criminal case for unlawful possession of a firearm and remains in ICE custody while his removal order reinstatement is processed.

On May 29, 2026, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement conducted a coordinated operation at Myrtle Park Government Center in Bluffton, South Carolina, detaining over 15 people who had failed to comply with deportation orders. The operation involved ICE's Enforcement and Removal Operations division, the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office, and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, which participated under a 287(g) task force agreement. Detainees were loaded onto a bus for transport to facilities in Charleston or Georgia.

Luis Armando Argueta Montejo, 43, from Mexico, was arrested on charges of incest and sexual conduct with a minor between ages 11 and 14 in Oconee County, South Carolina, after a minor was found giving birth at a local hospital. ICE lodged an arrest detainer on April 17 to ensure his transfer into federal custody following his court appearance. According to DHS, Montejo stated he first entered the country in 2006 and had no previous criminal history in the U.S.

U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Jasper County Sheriff's deputies, and Ridgeland police executed a coordinated operation Saturday involving approximately 250 officers across multiple locations in Jasper County, South Carolina, resulting in dozens of arrests. The year-long investigation targeted what Sheriff Chris Malphrus described as a criminal enterprise centered on an illegal cockfighting operation, which also uncovered connections to other criminal activity. Federal authorities are continuing the investigation and have not released specific details about the total number of detainees or their current locations.

Dinah Marie Chollet, a South Carolina restaurant co-owner, was charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor after joining a private group chat with Summerville High School students planning a walkout against ICE. Chollet stated she joined to express support for the students' activism, shared safety information, and then left the chat. She was arrested on February 12 and released on $1,000 bond, with an initial court appearance scheduled for April 14.

Michael James Garcia, a 39-year-old marine engineer with a valid crew visa, was interrogated by CBP agents aboard a Viking Ocean Cruises ship docked in Charleston on October 1, 2025. Agents claimed his email was linked to child pornography but never provided evidence or filed charges against him. Without a formal criminal proceeding or due process, his visa was revoked and he received a 10-year ban from entering the United States.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers conducted an unannounced raid at a home in North Charleston, South Carolina on July 30, arresting Franklin Arce. Ring camera footage shows an ICE agent pulling a gun on Arce's partner Celeste Hernandez and shoving her back into the house while Arce was being arrested. Arce's family claims the officers never showed a warrant or provided their names and badge numbers, and Hernandez stated Arce was working toward legal citizenship with a court hearing scheduled.

Sean Michael-Emmrich Johnson was arrested after turning himself in to Sullivan's Island Police Department for allegedly impersonating an ICE officer in a viral video where he harassed Hispanic men. He faces charges including felony kidnapping, impersonating a law enforcement officer, larceny, and assault and battery. Johnson bonded out of jail after a court appearance where his family cited his mental health challenges and request for treatment.
