An investigation identified Border Patrol agents Michael Sveum (EZ-2) and Edgar Vazquez (EZ-17) from an El Paso BORTAC unit as key participants in violent federal enforcement operations across the Midwest. The agents were documented using chemical munitions, pepper spray, and tear gas against crowds in Chicago and Minneapolis, including at the scene where ICE agent Jonathan Ross killed Renée Good on January 7, 2026. The investigation analyzed body camera footage, CBP reports, and incident videos to identify the agents and their role in multiple violent escalations.

Honduran grandfather dies in ICE custody after weeks of untreated illness complaints

Luis Beltran Yanez-Cruz, a 68-year-old Honduran national who had lived in the U.S. for decades, died on January 6, 2026, at John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital in Indio while in ICE custody. He was arrested during an ICE enforcement operation in Newark, New Jersey, on November 16, 2025, and transferred to the Imperial Regional Detention Facility in Calexico. While detained, he complained of vomiting, stomach pain, chest pain, and shortness of breath for over a week, but medical staff only provided pain pills without diagnosing the underlying cause. He was transferred to El Centro Regional Medical Center on January 4 after developing chest pain, then airlifted to JFK Memorial Hospital in Indio, where he was pronounced dead two days later. Medical personnel determined the cause was heart-related complications. His family was not notified until after his death and later questioned the quality and timeliness of his medical care.

Luis Gustavo Nunez Caceres, 42, dies in ICE custody after heart failure hospitalization

Luis Gustavo Nunez Caceres, a 42-year-old Honduran man with no criminal history, died on January 5, 2026 at HCA Houston Healthcare in Conroe, Texas after complications from congestive heart failure. He was detained by ICE on November 17, 2025 while on his way to work and initially held at Montgomery Processing Center before being transferred to Joe Corley ICE Processing Center on November 25. Despite repeated requests, he was unable to access medication needed to manage his congenital heart condition while in ICE custody. He was hospitalized on December 23, 2025 for worsening heart complications, admitted to intensive care on December 31 after multiple severe medical episodes, and died on January 5. His family faced a $4,000 cost to transport his body to Honduras for burial.

DHS seeks to deport witnesses to detainee death in Texas

Laotian refugee detained by ICE missed chemotherapy, now dying of terminal cancer

Oudone Lothirath, a 57-year-old Laotian refugee who arrived in the U.S. in the early 1980s, was detained by ICE in January 2026 during an immigration enforcement surge in Minnesota. While held for 10 days at a detention facility in El Paso, Texas, he missed vital chemotherapy sessions for terminal Hodgkin's lymphoma and received no medical care for his diabetes and heart condition. After his release, he was too weakened to continue his remaining chemotherapy treatments, and his cancer subsequently spread to his bone marrow. His care assistant, Christina Vilay, said he would have had "many more months" to live had he completed his scheduled chemotherapy. Lothirath, a working member of the Minneapolis Lao community who attended a local Buddhist temple and held a current work authorization card issued in 2023, is now receiving hospice care.

Deported partner dies attempting to return to family in Texas

Guatemalan man dies in ICE custody; wife deported before reunion

Lucía Pedro Juan and Francisco Gaspar-Andrés, a couple married 25 years, were arrested during a traffic stop in Florida in September 2025 and transferred to Fort Bliss ICE detention facility in El Paso. They were held separately and ICE agents ordered them not to communicate during processing. Pedro Juan was deported to Guatemala on November 28 without being allowed to see her husband. Gaspar-Andrés died on December 3 at a hospital in El Paso after 10 weeks in custody. At least 30 people died in ICE custody during 2025.

Honduran oyster worker drowns fleeing Coast Guard in Louisiana

Walter Francisco Cerrato Cabrera, a 48-year-old Honduran deckhand who had worked on oyster boats for 20 years, drowned on December 18 while jumping into Bayou La Loutre to avoid U.S. Coast Guard agents who had stopped at the docks. Cerrato and a younger coworker jumped from their boat when agents approached, but Cerrato, who could not swim, drowned in the bayou. The incident occurred amid increased immigration enforcement operations in lower St. Bernard Parish.

Nicaraguan man's death in ICE custody at Mississippi facility ruled a homicide

Delvin Francisco Rodriguez, a 39-year-old Nicaraguan man, died on December 14, 2025 at Merit Health Natchez after a medical emergency on December 4, 2025 at Adams County Correctional Center, and his death has since been ruled a homicide. Staff found Rodriguez unresponsive in his living area on December 4 at approximately 4:15 PM and transported him to the hospital, where his family agreed to remove him from life support 10 days later. ICE told family he was found hanging in a cell with a sheet, though Rodriguez had been housed in a large open unit with over 100 people and family was not told why he was in a cell, and nurses reportedly told family his injuries appeared inconsistent with ICE's account. Rodriguez was one of 7 ICE custody deaths in December 2025 during a year that saw 33 in-custody deaths nationally, the deadliest on record for ICE detention, with 15 more deaths reported through early April 2026.

Isaias Sanchez Barbosa's death by Border Patrol remains unresolved 14 months later

On December 11, 2024, Border Patrol agent Armando Flores shot and killed Isaias Sanchez Barbosa, a 31-year-old Mexican man with no criminal history, no prior U.S. entries, and no family in the United States, during a struggle near the Rio Grande in Starr County, Texas. A grand jury declined to indict Flores in June 2025, but Texas Rangers and federal investigators have kept the case open, and no body camera footage or complete official account has been released. An autopsy found three close-range gunshot wounds to Sanchez Barbosa's chest and forearm that fractured a rib and tore both lungs. A search of a nearby ranch, authorized by a warrant that went unfiled for months due to what officials called a clerical error, found no weapons, consistent with none being found on Sanchez Barbosa himself.

ACLU and human rights groups document abuse at Fort Bliss detention center

The ACLU and human rights organizations released reports on 12/8/2025 documenting conditions at Fort Bliss, the largest immigration detention site in the U.S., specifically at Camp East Montana, a tent facility in El Paso. Based on interviews with over 45 detained immigrants and 16 sworn declarations, the reports detail physical abuse, sexual abuse by officers, medical neglect, and coercive deportations to third countries. Specific cases cited include a teenager beaten into unconsciousness and another who sustained a broken tooth and ear damage, a Cuban immigrant whose head was slammed against a wall, and Geraldo Lunas Campos, whose death in ICE custody at a nearby facility was ruled a homicide following reports an officer choked him.

Shiraz Fatehali Sachwani, 48, dies in ICE custody at Prairieland Detention Center in Texas

Shiraz Fatehali Sachwani, a 48-year-old Pakistani man who had lived in the United States since 1996, died on December 6, 2025 after 162 days in ICE custody at Prairieland Detention Center in Texas. He entered detention with serious preexisting health conditions, including advanced kidney disease requiring dialysis, respiratory disease, diabetes and anemia, and was hospitalized multiple times during his detention before being returned to the facility. Life-sustaining therapies were ultimately withdrawn after he developed complications from pneumonia and sepsis during his final hospitalization.

Pete Sumalo Montejo, 72, dies after 284 days in ICE custody in Texas

Pete Sumalo Montejo, a 72-year-old Filipino man who had been a lawful permanent resident since age nine, was arrested by ICE on February 25, 2025, and held at the Montgomery Processing Center in Conroe, Texas, for 284 days. During his detention he was repeatedly hospitalized, underwent heart surgery, and required dialysis and burn care before being moved to a skilled nursing and rehabilitation facility. He suffered cardiac arrest on December 5, 2025, and died after being transported to Valley Baptist Medical Center. Medical reviewers cited cardiac arrest amid multiple chronic conditions, noting that the timing and contribution of his earlier severe burns remained unclear.

Man dies after 93 days in ICE detention, wife deported after forced separation

Francisco Gaspar Cristóbal Andrés, 48, died on December 3, 2025, after 93 days in ICE detention, becoming the first known detainee death at the Camp East Montana facility in El Paso, the nation's largest immigration detention center. He had worked in the U.S. for 20 years and was married to Lucía Pedro Juan for 25 years, with five children. Guards separated the couple during processing and ordered them not to touch, and weeks later Pedro Juan was deported to Guatemala despite pleading to see her husband, who was hospitalized in grave condition with liver and kidney complications; she learned of his death after returning to her hometown of Santa Eulalia. Detainees at the facility reported verbal abuse by guards, including derogatory remarks and claims they were served dog food.

Honduran man fleeing ICE agents fatally struck on Virginia highway

A 24-year-old Honduran man, Josué Castro Rivera, died after being struck by a vehicle while fleeing Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents on Interstate 264 in Norfolk, Virginia. He was on his way to a gardening job when his vehicle was stopped by ICE as part of a targeted operation, and he fled on foot when agents attempted to detain him and his passengers.

Josué Castro Rivera dies fleeing ICE agents on Virginia highway

Josué Castro Rivera, a 24-year-old Honduran man who had been in the U.S. for four years sending money home to family, died after being struck by a pickup truck while fleeing on foot from ICE agents who had pulled over his vehicle in Norfolk, Virginia, as he headed to a gardening job. His brother, Henry Castro, said Castro Rivera "had a very good heart" and is raising funds to return his body to Honduras for burial. DHS said the stop was part of a targeted operation and that Castro Rivera "resisted heavily and fled" before being struck; Virginia State Police confirmed he was pronounced dead at the scene and said the crash remains under investigation. His death follows those of a Mexican man fatally shot by federal agents during a traffic stop near Chicago and a farmworker who died after falling from a roof during an ICE raid in California.

Mexican immigrant Gabriel García Avilés dies in ICE custody after arrest in Costa Mesa

Gabriel García Avilés, 56, a Mexican immigrant who had lived in the United States for over 30 years and held a work permit, was arrested by U.S. Border Patrol on October 14, 2025, during a roving operation in Costa Mesa, California. He was transferred to ICE custody and moved to Adelanto ICE Processing Center on October 15. Avilés was subsequently hospitalized at Victor Valley Global Medical Center in critical condition. He died on October 23, 2025. ICE and hospital staff attributed his death to cardiac arrest resulting from suspected alcohol withdrawal symptoms. His family reported poor communication from detention staff, concerning hospital conditions, and observed physical injuries on Avilés including dried blood, cuts, broken teeth, and bruising. His family requested that medical staff cease resuscitation attempts.

Afghan human rights defender detained

Ali Faqirzada, 31, fled Afghanistan in 2021 and has been waiting for his asylum case to be decided since 2022. On October 14, ICE detained Ali after an Asylum Officer found he had a viable claim for asylum. Ali fled Afghanistan after he and his family received death threats from Taliban members. Every member of Ali's family, including his parents and siblings, have been granted asylum. Ali was the last family member waiting for a decision on his immigration case. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) terminated the application and instead placed Ali in expedited removal proceedings. Ali passed an initial screening by an Asylum Officer. ICE subsequently arrested and jailed him. ICE has the authority to immediately release Ali to continue his immigration case.
