Trump administration expands third-country deportations despite legal challenges

Sep 3, 2025 · Costa Rica, El Salvador, Eswatini, Mexico, Panama, Rwanda, South Sudan, Uganda

The Trump administration has significantly escalated third-country deportations, with nearly a dozen countries agreeing to accept U.S. deportees often in exchange for financial compensation or diplomatic pressure. A federal judge ruled in April that the government must assess Convention Against Torture claims before deporting migrants to third countries, but the Supreme Court permitted resumption of such deportations in June. Critics warn these deportations violate international human rights standards and place vulnerable migrants at risk.
