José Mejía Hernandez, a 45-year-old Mexican immigrant who has lived in the U.S. for 18 years, says he was walking to a bus stop on his way to work in Arlington on August 11 when agents in unmarked vehicles chased him. He says he ran out of fear and was shocked with a stun gun, causing him to lose consciousness; he woke up in a hospital with two blackened eyes, facial lacerations, and a brain hemorrhage, where he was hospitalized for three days with ICE officers stationed in his room. His attorney, Carlos Jurado, said Mejía Hernandez has no violent criminal history and had no removal order at the time. DHS disputed his account, saying he was responsive and that officers used necessary force and 'rendered aide' after he tried to evade arrest. He was discharged with an ankle monitor that he says delayed his ability to get a full MRI for more than a week, and he was later diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury at a second hospital. Rep. Don Beyer, Arlington County Board Chair Matt de Ferranti, and Commonwealth's Attorney Parisa Dehghani-Tafti have called for an investigation.
