Haitian TPS holders lose status, sparking fear across NY Caribbean community

Jul 27, 2025 · New York, NY, Haiti

Following a U.S. Supreme Court ruling allowing the Trump administration to end Temporary Protected Status for Haitians, about 350,000 Haitians lost their legal status as of July 27. Roughly 200,000 TPS holders had been in the U.S. workforce, including about 40,000 in New York, contributing an estimated $1.1 billion annually to the state's economy. Community radio stations like Irie Jam Radio have become key information sources as families face job losses and fear of ICE arrests.
