Haitian families fear school drop-offs as TPS termination fuels deportation anxiety in NYC

Jul 27, 2025 · New York, NY, Haiti

The federal government terminated Temporary Protected Status for Haiti on July 27, ending legal protections and work authorization for an estimated 40,000 Haitians in New York City. Community organizations report families avoiding work, medical appointments, and school due to fear of detention or deportation, with concerns focused especially on children's commutes to and from school. New York City schools say they will continue existing protocols barring immigration agents from entering without a warrant and are urging families to update emergency contacts in case a parent is detained.
