Grace Stephanie Calero Cabanilla, 39, and her 19-year-old daughter Giulianna Mía Carriel Calero, both of Ecuadorian origin, were arrested by ICE agents inside the emergency room of HCA Florida Poinciana Hospital while being treated after a car accident. The crash occurred when another vehicle crossed into their lane, causing their car to roll over; Grace was diagnosed with neck injuries and fitted with a cervical collar, while Giulianna suffered a nervous breakdown from the emotional shock. Polk County Sheriff's Office deputies, who participate in the federal 287(g) program, went to the hospital to question the women before ICE took them into custody, handcuffing and escorting them out in front of other patients and staff while Giulianna was still wearing her hospital gown. Grace's sister, Gia Calero, said the women were still receiving medical care when they were detained and that they had a pending asylum process. Video of the arrest circulated widely, prompting reaction from the Ecuadorian community and immigrant rights organizations opposed to ICE operations at hospitals and other places where people seek medical care.
