Cuban man deported to Central African Republic without warning after year in ICE custody

Yasmany Moreno de Armas, a 31-year-old Cuban immigrant who had been living and working in Florida, was deported by the Trump administration to the Central African Republic, a country he said he had never heard of before arriving there in late July. He said he only learned he was being sent to Africa five hours after his flight had already taken off. Moreno de Armas was arrested by immigration officials in May 2025 and spent roughly a year in ICE custody before his deportation; he had previously been imprisoned in Cuba for attempting to flee the island and fears for his safety if returned there. He is now stranded in a building in Bangui without documents, alongside deportees from countries including Ecuador, Honduras, Serbia, Russia and Vietnam, and CBS News found no criminal record for him beyond traffic and immigration violations.
