Leonardo Sánchez Fernández, a 49-year-old Cuban man from San Miguel del Padrón who had lived in Lehigh Acres, Florida, was deported by ICE and sent to Equatorial Guinea as part of a third-country deportation agreement, despite having valid U.S. legal residency until 2030. According to his mother, Caridad, guards pushed him as he disembarked the plane, causing him to fall and worsening a preexisting medical condition from a stomach surgery and skin graft. He is currently hospitalized and receiving IV fluids without a passport, documents, or consular assistance, after being held in a hotel with other deportees who say they were warned guards would shoot anyone approaching the facility's fence. He had been arrested by ICE six months earlier over an unspecified offense that the family says cost him his residency.
