Leonardo Sánchez, a 49-year-old Cuban national who arrived in the U.S. in 2010 under the Cuban Adjustment Act and worked as a welder, was deported from Louisiana to Liberia and then Equatorial Guinea. Sánchez, who has a severe abdominal injury from a 2018 shooting and stabbing that left his intestines held in by a thin skin graft, said ICE agents refused to remove his shackles or let him use the bathroom during the 14-hour flight, causing him to wet himself. When he refused to disembark in Liberia out of fear of being abandoned, he said agents knocked him to the ground and knelt on his abdomen, and doctors in Equatorial Guinea told him the country lacked equipment to treat his condition. DHS said Sánchez was ordered removed after a cocaine possession conviction and denied that agents pressed on his abdomen or refused him bathroom access.
