ICE raid at Cato bakery detained 69 workers, including mothers with infants

On Sept. 4, 2025, ICE agents in tactical gear raided Nutrition Bar Confectioners, a family-owned business operating in New York for nearly 50 years, detaining 69 workers including three mothers with infants. Governor Kathy Hochul said federal agents separated workers based on skin color during the operation. More than 50 of those detained have since been flown back to their countries of origin, and five were indicted for illegal reentry. Local sheriff's offices from Oswego and Cayuga counties assisted with security and traffic during the raid, prompting public backlash and a subsequent lawsuit by 15 New York sheriffs against a state law restricting local-federal immigration cooperation.
