Adam Abdullah, a 31-year-old Somali asylum-seeker and auto mechanic who arrived in the U.S. in 2023 and lived in the Twin Cities, was pulled over by federal agents in St. Paul on December 12 at the start of the Trump administration's 'Operation Metro Surge.' He held a work permit and Social Security number, regularly checked in with ICE, and had no criminal record beyond two parking tickets, but agents gave no explanation for targeting him. Over the following months he was moved between detention facilities in Minnesota, Kentucky and Louisiana before being flown, shackled, to Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, where he has been held for about two weeks in Camp Six with limited phone calls and exercise time. His attorney said he is among eight Somali detainees held at Guantánamo, several of whom were also arrested in the Twin Cities, and the ACLU has sued the government over its authority to detain immigrants there.
