Gerardo Chavez Lopez, a longtime Clatsop County resident who owned and operated businesses in the area, was arrested by ICE officers in June along with at least one other person. ICE officers used property at the Port of Astoria to move people between vehicles during the arrests, prompting complaints to the Oregon Department of Justice over a potential violation of the state's sanctuary laws. The Port of Astoria said staff faced a difficult situation and did the right thing by allowing ICE agents access to port property.
