22 states and DC sue Trump administration over new green card benefits rule

Sep 14, 2026·Location: New York, NY

A coalition of 22 states, the District of Columbia, and several cities led by New York City sued the Trump administration over a new 'public charge' policy allowing immigration officers to deny green cards based on use of public benefits. The policy expands on a prior Trump-era rule by allowing consideration of benefits used by family members, including U.S. citizen children. States argue the policy will cause families to forgo benefits like SNAP and Medicaid out of fear, costing states billions in federal funding.
