A Michigan Advance analysis of government data obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request found that 6,307 people were apprehended by ICE in Michigan between January 2025 and early August 2026, with detainees held an average of 47 days and frequently transferred between facilities, often out of state to Texas, Louisiana or Arizona. About three-fourths of those arrested were deported or removed, including some through voluntary departure, while immigration attorneys described how transfers disrupt detainees' access to lawyers, language support and family visits. The report also cited the case of a Chaldean detainee at Michigan's North Lake Processing Center who, after meeting with members of Congress, was deported to Iraq, a country where he does not speak the language and has no family, illustrating the practice of third-country deportation.
