El Salvador imprisons deportees from U.S. as Trump hosts Bukele
Apr 14, 2025
Since March, El Salvador has accepted more than 200 Venezuelan immigrants deported by the Trump administration, which has accused them of gang activity without releasing their names or presenting evidence, and has held them in a maximum-security prison outside San Salvador. El Salvador is also holding a Maryland man whom the U.S. government has admitted was wrongfully deported, despite court orders requiring his return. President Trump hosted El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele at the White House as the two countries expanded a deportation agreement under which the U.S. pays about $6 million for El Salvador to imprison the deportees for a year.
