Somali refugee detained over 20 months, forced to win protection a second time against deportation to Cameroon
2026
Country of origin: Somalia
A Somali refugee granted withholding of removal, denied asylum only because of the 2023 asylum-ban regulation, was detained for more than 20 months. A year after winning, he had to present an entire protection case again, this time against removal to Cameroon, a country he has no connection to. "It's difficult to explain a country you've never been to," he said. The judge asked from the bench what interest the government had in finding a new country for him and detaining him at its own expense. He was finally released and again won protection, but ICE is appealing the grant, and he says he still lives in fear: "You don't know, are you dying, or are you living?"
